Thinking about getting a dog

We went to the Humane Society today to see a couple of dogs. I checked out the website first and had it narrowed down. Well, turns out one of them was already adopted. We met the other, which is a yellow lab/shepard mix. She's still a puppy, about 6-8 months, they're not really sure since she was a stray. She's very friendly and was good with the kids. So we put in our application and they'll have to check our references. Funny... no one checked out our references when we were deciding to have kids. Anyway, there's another family looking at her too, so we'll see what happens.
